Insects by season

Southeast seasonal guess, tuned a bit for this water type. Stage tips from the insect notes. Cross-check water lists against NCWRC / VA DWR.

Gap: No Rapidan-specific insect list. Staunton River (Rapidan trib) is a separate seed water — do not merge. Elevation not stated.

Temp & time of day

Thermometer-first. Brookie-conservative: treat mid-60s as caution and upper 60s as a hold. Prefer the cool half of the feeding band. Summer: mornings only if temps allow; otherwise do not recommend.

Access

C&R (sources). SNP / Rapidan WMA public lands — stay on park/WMA rules; NPS/DWR regs can differ by parcel (confirm official pages). Ethics-first, low-pressure: do not pin hole-by-hole.

Conservative one-liner only. No parking spots, crossings, or trespass workarounds.

Ethics: VA DWR brook-trout notes apply: prefer <65 °F; ~70 °F stressful/fatal. Soft hold earlier here than on a rainbow DH. Product should be willing to say “do not recommend” in summer. Sensitivity card. No invented hoot-owl / SNP closure. Fall: brook trout spawn — avoid redds.
Gage notes

Use the linked USGS pages and a thermometer on the water. Where a Grade A bind is live, the card above pulls current readings.
